The WH series in our range serve as the Main/Master controller. This unit can be supplied as a complete standalone unit with 8 x Analog Inputs and 8 x Digital Outputs and all the communication hardware as standard.
This includes:

  • RF Radio for communication with Remote Terminal Units (RTUs)
  • GPRS modem

  • Wi-Fi
  • USB

As a main controller the WH units can be connected to a PC where a PC App can be used to monitor the performance of the plant processes through the USB port. This connection also allows the operator the ability to update firmware and commission the plant

Further to this the unit can be supplied and configured as a remote Human Machine Interface (HMI) on its own without the I/Os. This make the unit more cost effective and serves as a terminal where a network of TRUs can be controlled from.

Radio communication between that Main/Master unit and the RTUs is via RF radio and can be as much as 15KM line of sight. This allows for cost effective cable-less installation of great distances.

All our Radios are programmed to act as repeaters. This allows for continuous communication between the Main unit and the RTUs even if the RTU is out of immediate line of sight

Remote access to the unit through a GPRS connection allows for remote dashboards to be developed. .This allows for remote terminal monitoring. The remote dashboards are hosted on Cloud servers that also allow for flexibility in development as well as sustainable operation.

The HMI allows for quick interaction with hardware on site by clicking on tabs on the touch screen

Installation example

The PLA3 unit is currently our largest RTU that serves as a network expansion devise. The unit is supplied standard with a RF Radio to allow for cable-less communication with the main controller (WH series). This cost effective solution allows the plant owner to manage a vast amount of I/Os over an area that can be as far as 15Km. If a greater distance is required then a repeater can be included.
The unit can be configured with 16 Analog Inputs and 24 Digital Outputs or as a 16 Digital Output and 14 analog Input unit.

Overview

Programmable compact stand-alone Controller with communication interfaces and optional integrated IO. This unit form the basis of the network and act as the central Data collection and control point. The units can be fitted with or without a Touch screen Human Machine Interface (HMI). As a main hub the WH series can be complimented by RTUs to form a large network. All network expansion devices or Remote Terminal Units (RTU) in the Warthog control system network can act as repeaters to further extend the radio range.

Alternatively enable connection in difficult non-line of sight locations. The robust aluminum enclosure is rated IP 67 without the HMI and is recommended as a covered environment system with the HMI onboard the unit. The connectors are rated IP68 and therefore do not compromise the integrity of the enclosure and also ensure that the PC Boards are in an environment conducive to continuous operation in industrial applications.

The RF communications allow for cost effective and stable communication over long distances without the need for cable or online infrastructure.

The radio utilizes a modulation technique that provides significantly longer range than competing technologies. The modulation is based on spread-spectrum techniques and a variation of chirp spread spectrum (CSS) with integrated forward error correction (FEC). This significantly improves the receiver sensitivity and as with other spread‐spectrum modulation techniques, uses the entire channel bandwidth to broadcast a signal, making it robust to channel noise and insensitive to frequency offsets. The radio can demodulate signals 19.5dB below the noise floor while most frequency shift keying systems (FSK) need a signal power of 8-10dB above the noise floor to demodulate properly

Installation Instructions

Complete WHA1A Units

The WHA1A units are programmed and setup as a main control or central Hub to allow for remote monitoring and control of I/Os. The units are supplied as a Master/Main SCADA. The units can be configure to include:

10Amp digital Relay as standard as the digital outputs that can be programmed to switch or toggle in case of a failure to the system. The unit in its complete form can serve as a neat standalone unit with all the communications HMI and I/Os on board. If a larger network with more I/Os needs to be managed then the unit will serve as the central controller with Remote terminal Units (RTUs) to expand the network.

These RTUs will form a network where the communication will be via the RF radios up to a distance of 15 KM line of sight. All our radios are programmed to serve as repeaters that allow for a distance greater than 15 KM to be covered or when RTU units are not in the direct line of sight. This will allow for flawless and wireless communications.

Alternatively the WH unit can be supplied without onboard I/Os to purely serve as a remote main controller. The touch screen HMI will allow the operator to communicate with RTU units via the RF radio standard on all units. This makes for a more cost effective installation.

Installation

The kit includes cables that terminate in the Male end connectors. These connectors are marked for installation. The kit include 2 types of cables that include 3 core as well as 2 core cables. The 2 and 3 core cables are to be used as per below table

The cables are connected by unscrewing the blue/black weather protection cap as seen in the pictures. Insert the cable mounted connector into the appropriate socket and secure the blue retaining ring on the cable mount connector or insert the ETHERNET connector until the click is felt. This will ensure a secure and weather resistant connection.

Connections

  • All instruments that are connected to the ANALOG IN Socket requires loop power of 24 VDC. Loop Positive (+) as high end.
  • The DIGITAL OUTPUT is a relay with NO, COM and NC. This is a dry contact and require power to allow for switching.
